First Fruit & The Force Of Mammon

Text: Matthew 6:24
"No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and DESPISE the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon."

Today, our opening scripture shows us one force that can compete with God in the life of a believer and that is mammon (money). The deception of mammon is in two ways; it can  make one hate God altogether but the most subtle is that it might not make you hate God but DESPISE Him. Mammon seeks to be worshipped or to become the master in any relationship.

Jesus said something profound about money in Luke 16:9. The Passion translation reads ‘It is important that you use the wealth of this world to demonstrate your friendship with God by winning friends and blessing others. Then, when this world fails and falls apart, your generosity will provide you with an eternal reward’. Jesus said that we should make friends with money and this is because same scripture says that money answereth ALL THINGS (Eccl. 10:19)

But then, in the later part of Luke 16, Jesus equally admonishes us not to be unfaithful with the same mammon because you see, it has an unrighteous part of it that can contend with God in the life of the God child in so much that he begins to despise God when certain level of wealth is attained. When you are unfaithful, mammon begins to control you. God’s people need to understand something important; mammon or money is not the BLESSING or the TRUE RICHES. No matter how much wealth you amass, it is not the blessing because even unbelievers have so much wealth. The blessing of God makes one rich not the other way round.
