Qualities Of A Disciple:(Selflessness II)

Text: John 10:27
" My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me"

We learned yesterday that in discipleship, there are prices that must be paid, and a true disciple will pay them joyfully. He/she does not pay the price counting or reckoning it for God for a payback means or for recompense. Scriptures in Luke 9:23 says And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. This shows us that in discipleship, paying the price is a daily affair. Every single day, there is a price to be paid for kingdom.

In Mark 10, a pharisee came to Jesus and wanted to be His disciple. And being a pharisee, the man knew the law and in the ensuing conversation he had with Jesus, had been obeying them since he was a youth. In our dispensation, you can say that the man was a Christian but look at Jesus’ response in verse 21. It reads- Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

When Jesus said this, the pharisee could not take it because it meant denying himself of everything he has probably laboured for and gotten, he couldn’t pay the price. It may not be physical wealth or riches that withhold many today, it may be something else that they value above kingdom. Ask yourself today, is there anything in your life that you cannot give up for the Lord? Is there a price that is too costly for you to pay in your walk with and for the Lord?
