Token Of The Covenant

Text: Genesis 9:12
"And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:"

Yesterday, we started looking into covenants which we understood to be the way God executes His kingdom agenda on the earth. God is a God of principles and if He would do anything in the realm of men, He would by principle come into a covenant with a man to fulfill His agenda. Throughout scriptures, we see men who God established His covenant with, to roll out His eternal plan on the earth. For instance, take a look at Abraham. The children of Israel did not become God’s people when they were in their large numbers rather, they became God’s people when He made a covenant with their forefather Abraham and through his loins, God established them as His people.

Our opening scripture shows us a vital truth about God’s covenant with men, the token. We understand from that scripture that God gave a token of the covenant he had with Noah which was to last for generations – a perpetual continuity. The token was a sign or symbol of the covenant. This idea of a token lets us know that for every covenant principle that is recognized in the heavens, there must be a reflection of it on the earth, through a sign or token.

The token or sign God gave Noah can be seen in the proceeding verse of our opening scripture. It reads I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth (Gen 9:13). This is amazing. So, whenever we see what we call the rainbow in our day, we are always reminded of the covenant God made with Noah, never to destroy the earth by flood and as long as the earth remains, that covenant still stands. As we journey deeper over the coming days, we would realize the importance of the token one of which forms the basis of our consecration.
